The Monroeville Municipal Authority wishes to inform its customers of a rate increase for Water and Sewer in 2021.
As a part of the Clean Water Act, the EPA is requiring cities to upgrade their sewer systems and reduce the environmental impact from sewer overflows into the regions waterways. The subsequent upgrades have necessitated an increase in sewer treatment charges from ALCOSAN of 7% on January 1, 2021. This increase along with the inflationary impact on normal operating costs will increase Authority sewer expenses by approximately $491,000.
Effective January 10, 2021 Sewer rates will increase by 7% per 1,000 gallons. The resulting residential rate will go from $12.75 to $13.64 per thousand. Alcosan also increased the monthly service charge 7% from $5.95 to $6.37. The monthly sewer bill for a residential minimum user (2,000 gallons) will increase by $2.20 in 2021.
As a part of the Monroeville Municipal Authority’s commitment to upgrading the aging water infrastructure, increase in operational expenses and supplier purchasing rates the Authority water expenses will increase by approximately $494,000. Effective January 10, 2021 Water rates will increase by 5% per 1,000 gallons. This will be the first water rate increase in three years. The resulting residential rate will go from $5.46 to $5.73 per 1,000 gallons. The combined sewer and water monthly rate for a residential minimum user (2,000 gallons) will increase from $42.37 to $45.11. Even with this rate increase the MMA water rates will still be within the lowest 10% of purchased water rates in the surrounding areas.
The Monroeville Municipal Authority remains committed to operating and maintaining Monroeville’s water and sewer systems to the highest standards at the lowest possible cost.
