The Monroeville Municipal Authority is proud to inform its customers that Water and Sewer rates will remain at 2018 pricing levels.
As a part of the Clean Water Act, the EPA is requiring cities to upgrade their sanitary sewer systems and reduce the environmental impact from sewer overflows into the regions waterways. The subsequent upgrades have necessitated an increase in sewage treatment charges from ALCOSAN of 7% on January 1, 2020. This increase along with the inflationary impact on normal operating costs will increase Authority sewage expenses by approximately $770,000.
Utilizing effective Financial Management Principals, the Monroeville Municipal Authority is confident the ALCOSAN rate increase effective January 1, 2020 can be absorbed under the current rate structure. Therefore, the existing residential sewer rate will remain $12.75 per thousand thru December 31, 2020. ALCOSAN will increase the monthly service charge from $5.56 to $5.95. This will result in a monthly bill increase of 39 cents per month for residential users in 2020.
The inflationary impact on normal operating costs will increase the Authority water expenses by approximately $90,000 in 2020. The application of these Management Principals will allow the Monroeville Municipal Authority to absorb these increases while continuing its commitment to upgrading the aging water infrastructure. The MMA water rate of $5.46 per thousand gallons is consistently among the lowest 10% of purchased water rates in the surrounding areas.
The Monroeville Municipal Authority Employees and the Board of Directors remain committed to operating and maintaining Monroeville's water and sewer systems to the highest standards at the lowest possible cost.
