The Monroeville Municipal Authority wishes to inform its customers that the current Water and Sewer rates will remain steady in 2019.
As a part of the Clean Water Act, the EPA is requiring cities to upgrade their sanitary sewer systems and reduce the environmental impact from sewer overflows into the regions waterways. The subsequent upgrades have necessitated an increase in sewage treatment charges from ALCOSAN of 7% on January 1, 2019. This increase along with the inflationary impact on normal operating costs will increase Authority expenses by approximately $450,000.
Utilizing Effective Financial Management, the Monroeville Municipal Authority is confident that Alcosan's 7% rate increase Effective January 1, 2019 can be absorbed under the current rate structure. Therefore, the existing residential sewer rate will remain $12.75 per thousand thru December 31, 2019. Alcosan will increase the monthly service charge from $5.20 to $5.56. This will result in a monthly bill increase of 36 cents for residential users in 2019.
The application of these Management Principals will allow the Monroeville Municipal Authority's commitment to upgrading its aging water infrastructure to continue in 2019. The MMA water rate of $5.46 per thousand gallons is consistently among the lowest 10% of purchased water rates in the surrounding areas. The current water rate will remain in effect until the semiannual budget review on July 15, 2019.
The Monroeville Municipal Authority Employees and the Board of Directors remain committed to operating and maintaining Monroeville's water and sewer systems to the highest standards at the lowest possible cost.
